How to change your name after marriage in Kentucky

For adult U.S. citizens taking their spouse’s current surname unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States.

Have one or more certified copies of your marriage certificate from the office that recorded the marriage. Prepare the regional office name change and the updated Social Security card. Choose a name correction only or an eligible renewal, with requirements for that service.

Before updating your state credential

Update Social Security first and bring the updated card to the Kentucky credential visit.

Before you begin

  • Kentucky asks for SSA processing and the updated physical Social Security card before the credential name change. This differs from states that accept processing confirmation alone.
  • Apply for a corrected license or personal ID within ten days of the legal name change. Permit and specialist requirements need the actual regional office instructions. A name only correction does not automatically become renewal or require renewal vision screening.
  • Notify the residence county clerk of the marriage name change within 15 days. Title submission, corrected title record, registration result and physical documents are separate events.
  • For lender held, electronic or missing titles, joint owners, retained liens or alternative ID, prepare the clerk’s specific instructions. Do not use a transfer or lost title declaration that does not describe your circumstances.
  • Ordinary voter registration supports paper and online signature alternatives. The paper form does not require a Kentucky credential; registration may not be denied for SSN omission. Voting identification rules remain separate.
  • Safe at Home participants should report a name change to the program within 14 days and arrange the private voter update. Keep protected addresses and identifiers outside this plan.

Which marriage certificate do I need?

Have one or more certified copies of your marriage certificate from the office that recorded the marriage. Later steps in this plan generally ask for a certified copy, so it is the first thing to have in hand.

What to have ready

  • The jurisdiction where the marriage was legally recorded
  • A method of payment that office accepts
  • Any identification that office asks for

How do I update Social Security?

Update your Social Security record, which employers, banks, and agencies check your name against. This record is referenced by several later steps, so many people handle it early in the sequence.

What to have ready

  • Certified marriage certificate
  • Current identity documentation
  • Anything the agency’s own instructions list

Which license or ID instructions apply?

Prepare the regional office name change and the updated Social Security card. Choose a name correction only or an eligible renewal, with requirements for that service. Gather the name evidence while SSA processes the update. The corrected license or personal ID application has a ten day legal name change deadline; renewal remains a separate choice.

When should I update my passport?

Review the current official passport guidance and decide when to update. Passport timing interacts with any travel you have planned, so it is worth reviewing alongside your other identity documents rather than last.

How do I update my vehicle title?

Notify your residence county clerk and prepare its same owner title update. Confirm the corrected title record separately from submission and document delivery. Give the clerk the former and new names within 15 days of the marriage name change. Notice and useful preparation need not wait for a mailed credential.

How do I update my vehicle registration?

Ask the county clerk to update and confirm the registration name separately. A title application alone does not establish the registration result. The same visit may address both vehicle records, but each needs its own result. Ask about any separate registration request and current printed registration.

How do I update voter registration?

Choose ordinary online or paper registration, or contact Safe at Home privately if enrolled. A new Kentucky credential is not a universal voter prerequisite. Check election timing and the process that applies before sending personal information. Submission needs county acceptance; program participants have private instructions.
