Social Security name change: when it comes first and how to do it
Some state DMVs publish a Social Security prerequisite or interval before a license update. How the replacement card process works, what it costs, and where to check state guidance.

Social Security is an early step in the covered-state plans, but the reason must not be generalized. Some motor-vehicle agencies publish that they verify or require the federal update; others recommend an interval; others publish no verified interval. The plan shows the state’s sourced note instead of claiming the same mechanism everywhere.
How the process actually works
The SSA describes it plainly: “You’ll make this change by requesting a replacement Social Security card.” You start online at ssa.gov, and depending on your situation you may finish online or be directed to book an appointment at a local office. SSA policy includes marriage certificates, souvenir certificates, and certified copies of marriage records among documents it may accept as evidence of a marriage-based name change. The document must also meet SSA’s separate identity and requested-name evidence rules. Review the marriage-document policy and current application instructions for your situation. After the request completes, the SSA’s published timeline is 5 to 10 business days for the replacement card to arrive by mail. There is no fee, ever; anyone charging you for a Social Security card replacement is a middleman.
The propagation wait states actually publish
Your new card arriving does not establish that a state agency can already verify the update. Maryland tells applicants to wait 72 hours after updating with Social Security before visiting the MVA; Nevada says electronic verification may take two or more business days. Other states publish different instructions or no verified interval. The plan includes an interval only when the corresponding state source supports it.
What you do not need
You do not need to pay anyone, upload your Social Security number to a third party, or buy a “filing service.” The SSA accepts applications only from you. That is also why we never ask for your SSN: a sequencing plan needs to know that this step exists and where it falls in the order, not the number itself.
