Changing your last name after marriage in Arizona

Get your name change done. Enjoy being married.

Arizona gives you 10 days from your legal name change taking effect to notify MVD, and requires Social Security first with a two business day wait before the visit. You can gather your documents while that earlier update is in progress.

With Name & Next

A head start on the paperwork.

Which application applies to you? What documents should you have beside you? Does another update need to happen first?

Name & Next asks about your situation and brings the relevant guidance together, so you can start with more of those questions answered. Have what you’ll need in front of you, including the details worth checking before you submit.

Other kinds of help.

Some services fill selected applications or provide printed materials and mailing supplies. Check what’s included and what you still complete yourself.

The Arizona details

Bring evidence that connects both names.

For your MVD visit, identification needs to connect your previous and new names. Bring original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency.

Your plan brings those document checks together with the timing instructions, so you can prepare before setting aside time to go. If documents or processing delays make the timing unclear, ask MVD how to proceed.

What you’ll need

Original or issuing-agency certified marriage record; an ordinary photocopy or notarized copy is not enough.

  • Current identity evidence accepted by SSA. If the marriage was more than two years ago or the marriage document cannot establish identity, SSA may also require identity evidence in the prior name.
  • Citizenship or immigration evidence if SSA needs to establish or update that status. Enter identity numbers only with SSA.

The SSA service determines whether your request can be completed online or needs an appointment. SS-5 is a paper companion when that route calls for it.

Is Name & Next right for me?

For adult U.S. citizens living in Arizona and taking their spouse’s current last name unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States. You can also buy before a planned U.S. wedding and use the same purchase afterward.

Check the full fit before buying

Any state credentials or vehicle records you want to update must already be Arizona records, with vehicle owners staying the same. Having no state credentials or vehicle records is fine. Interstate and ownership transfers, hyphenated or newly created names, divorce, court ordered changes and immigration routes are outside this plan. Read the full eligibility details.

You can prepare before the wedding or while waiting for your certified marriage certificate. Official updates still depend on the recorded marriage and each agency’s requirements.

Can I prepare while waiting for Social Security?

Yes. You can gather documents and look through the preparation while an earlier update is in progress. Arizona’s instruction is to change your SSA record, then wait two business days before visiting MVD. Your plan keeps that condition with the MVD step while you prepare for other relevant updates. Read MVD’s timing instructions.

Will the MVD visit cover my vehicle records too?

MVD says its name change process updates your driver record and vehicle registration records. You also need to order a new license or ID card. Have the details of each vehicle ready and ask the office to check the records you need updated. A name change keeps the same owners. See what MVD updates.

Which county holds my marriage record?

For an Arizona marriage license, request a certified copy from the Clerk of Superior Court in the county that issued it. That may be different from where you live now. If your marriage was recorded in another state, request the record there. Your Arizona residence determines the state guidance you need, not where the marriage record is kept.
