Changing your last name after marriage in Florida

Get your name change done. Enjoy being married.

If you married in Florida less than 60 days ago and need your certificate promptly, ask the clerk in the county that issued your license. The record may still be on its way to the state.

With Name & Next

A head start on the paperwork.

Which application applies to you? What documents should you have beside you? Does another update need to happen first?

Name & Next asks about your situation and brings the relevant guidance together, so you can start with more of those questions answered. Have what you’ll need in front of you, including the details worth checking before you submit.

Some services fill selected applications or provide printed materials and mailing supplies. Check what’s included and what you still complete yourself.

The Florida details

Prepare for your license and vehicle updates.

For your Florida license or ID, update Social Security first, then allow 24 to 48 hours before visiting an office. You can gather documents during that interval.

Your plan keeps the preparation and official guidance beside each update. Your vehicle records still need attention after the license or ID change, so you can prepare for those requests too.

What you’ll need

Original or issuing-agency certified marriage record; an ordinary photocopy or notarized copy is not enough.

  • Current identity evidence accepted by SSA. If the marriage was more than two years ago or the marriage document cannot establish identity, SSA may also require identity evidence in the prior name.
  • Citizenship or immigration evidence if SSA needs to establish or update that status. Enter identity numbers only with SSA.

The SSA service determines whether your request can be completed online or needs an appointment. SS-5 is a paper companion when that route calls for it.

Is Name & Next right for me?

For adult U.S. citizens living in Florida and taking their spouse’s current last name unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States. You can also buy before a planned U.S. wedding and use the same purchase afterward.

Check the full fit before buying

Any state credentials or vehicle records you want to update must already be Florida records, with vehicle owners staying the same. Having no state credentials or vehicle records is fine. Interstate and ownership transfers, hyphenated or newly created names, divorce, court ordered changes and immigration routes are outside this plan. Read the full eligibility details.

You can prepare before the wedding or while waiting for your certified marriage certificate. Official updates still depend on the recorded marriage and each agency’s requirements.

We just married in Florida. Where should I request the certificate?

If your ceremony was less than 60 days ago and you need evidence promptly, Florida’s Department of Health directs you to the clerk in the county that issued your license. Recording and forwarding to the state takes approximately 60 days. That is not a required wait before asking your clerk for a copy. Read the certificate guidance. For a marriage recorded elsewhere, request the record there.

When can I change my Florida license after Social Security?

Complete the Social Security name change first, then allow 24 to 48 hours before the Florida license or ID update. That interval follows the completed SSA change; it is not a promise that SSA processes your request within two days. Name changes require an office visit. Check the official name change instructions and your chosen office’s arrangements before going.

Does changing my license take care of my vehicle records?

Your title and registration still need attention after the license or ID update. The official guidance calls for the name on your license or ID and your title and registration to be updated within 30 days of the change. Ask the office handling your vehicle records what applies to your title and any lienholder arrangements. Do not assume the license visit completed those records too.
