Changing your last name after marriage in Iowa
Get your name change done. Enjoy being married.
For an Iowa vehicle, you need a replacement registration receipt when your name changes. A corrected title certificate is optional. Knowing that distinction lets you prepare the required update and decide separately whether you want a new title certificate.

A head start on the paperwork.
Which application applies to you? What documents should you have beside you? Does another update need to happen first?

Request your Social Security name update
Open SSA's name-change service to start the request or arrange the appointment it requires.

Original or issuing-agency certified marriage record; an ordinary photocopy or notarized copy is not enough.

- Current identity evidence accepted by SSA. If the marriage was more than two years ago or the marriage document cannot establish identity, SSA may also require identity evidence in the prior name.
- Citizenship or immigration evidence if SSA needs to establish or update that status. Enter identity numbers only with SSA.
The SSA service determines whether your request can be completed online or needs an appointment. SS-5 is a paper companion when that route calls for it.

Is Name & Next right for me?
For adult U.S. citizens living in Iowa and taking their spouse’s current last name unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States. You can also buy before a planned U.S. wedding and use the same purchase afterward.
Check the full fit before buying
Any state credentials or vehicle records you want to update must already be Iowa records, with vehicle owners staying the same. Having no state credentials or vehicle records is fine. Interstate and ownership transfers, hyphenated or newly created names, divorce, court ordered changes and immigration routes are outside this plan. Read the full eligibility details.
You can prepare before the wedding or while waiting for your certified marriage certificate. Official updates still depend on the recorded marriage and each agency’s requirements.
Should I choose my married name before completing an Iowa marriage application?
Yes. Check your intended name before finalizing an Iowa marriage license application. Iowa Code 595.5 provides for indicating a name change on the application and says the names on the license become the parties’ legal names. Ask the issuing county recorder about any uncertainty before completing it. This concerns an Iowa license; if you marry elsewhere, follow that jurisdiction’s instructions.
Can I change the name on my Iowa license or ID online?
No. Iowa DOT requires an appointment in person with proof of the name change. Photocopies and faxes are not accepted. A certified copy must carry the issuing court or registrar’s original seal and certification, rather than just a file or date stamp. Read the DOT name change instructions and the linked evidence guidance before gathering your documents.
Must I buy a new vehicle title to change my last name?
A corrected title certificate is optional. Iowa requires a replacement registration receipt and marriage evidence submitted to your county treasurer. Ask the county about its document and request arrangements, and decide separately whether you want the title certificate reissued. Iowa’s vehicle rules explain the distinction in sections 400.7(10) and 400.39(3). Keep the same vehicle owners and ask the county to confirm both the registration and ownership record names.
