Changing your last name after marriage in Kansas
Get your name change done. Enjoy being married.
For a Kansas license or ID update, a duplicate Kansas marriage license is not accepted. Driver Licensing’s checklist calls for a government issued marriage certificate. Check the record you have before setting aside time for your visit.

A head start on the paperwork.
Which application applies to you? What documents should you have beside you? Does another update need to happen first?
Name & Next asks about your situation and brings the relevant guidance together, so you can start with more of those questions answered. Have what you’ll need in front of you, including the details worth checking before you submit.

Match your preparation to the service.
A first REAL ID needs different preparation from a name correction. Use the checklist for your service and confirm any additional replacement identity requirements with Driver Licensing.
Your plan brings the marriage evidence, identity requirements and Social Security timing into the preparation for your visit. Those are useful details to have settled before setting aside time to go.

Request your Social Security name update
Open SSA's name-change service to start the request or arrange the appointment it requires.

Original or issuing-agency certified marriage record; an ordinary photocopy or notarized copy is not enough.

- Current identity evidence accepted by SSA. If the marriage was more than two years ago or the marriage document cannot establish identity, SSA may also require identity evidence in the prior name.
- Citizenship or immigration evidence if SSA needs to establish or update that status. Enter identity numbers only with SSA.
The SSA service determines whether your request can be completed online or needs an appointment. SS-5 is a paper companion when that route calls for it.

Is Name & Next right for me?
For adult U.S. citizens living in Kansas and taking their spouse’s current last name unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States. You can also buy before a planned U.S. wedding and use the same purchase afterward.
Check the full fit before buying
Any state credentials or vehicle records you want to update must already be Kansas records, with vehicle owners staying the same. Having no state credentials or vehicle records is fine. Interstate and ownership transfers, hyphenated or newly created names, divorce, court ordered changes and immigration routes are outside this plan. Read the full eligibility details.
You can prepare before the wedding or while waiting for your certified marriage certificate. Official updates still depend on the recorded marriage and each agency’s requirements.
When can I update my Kansas credential after Social Security?
Kansas requires your SSA name update at least 24 hours before updating your credential. You can gather documents during that time. Its name change checklist includes your Kansas credential, accepted marriage evidence and one proof of current Kansas residence, which may be in your previous name. Use the document checklist for your service and confirm any additional replacement identity requirements with Driver Licensing. A first REAL ID needs its own preparation.
Where do I get the marriage certificate Kansas accepts?
For a Kansas marriage, the Office of Vital Statistics offers certified copies. The completed license is first filed with the issuing county’s district court, then forwarded to Vital Statistics. Driver Licensing specifically excludes Kansas duplicate marriage licenses, so check that you are ordering the accepted record. If you married outside Kansas, obtain the official record from that jurisdiction and confirm its acceptability with Driver Licensing.
Is there a notice deadline for my Kansas driver’s license?
Kansas requires written notice within 10 days of a name change for driver’s license applicants or holders. Include your former name, new name and any driver’s license number you hold. This notice is separate from replacing your credential; it is not a stated deadline for every state ID. Read the notice rule and use Driver Licensing’s contact details.
