Changing your last name after marriage in Minnesota

Get your name change done. Enjoy being married.

If you have a Social Security number, Minnesota DVS asks you to wait until SSA has processed your new name before the license or ID visit. Sending the request is different from confirming the update.

With Name & Next

A head start on the paperwork.

Which application applies to you? What documents should you have beside you? Does another update need to happen first?

Name & Next asks about your situation and brings the relevant guidance together, so you can start with more of those questions answered. Have what you’ll need in front of you, including the details worth checking before you submit.

Some services fill selected applications or provide printed materials and mailing supplies. Check what’s included and what you still complete yourself.

The Minnesota details

Know when you’re ready for the visit.

You can check online for confirmation that SSA processed your new name, or wait for the card in the mail. DVS does not give a fixed number of days that establishes the update.

Name & Next puts that distinction beside the preparation for your license or ID. You can gather the certified evidence and choose the right office while you wait, so the next visit has a clear starting point.

What you’ll need

Original or issuing-agency certified marriage record; an ordinary photocopy or notarized copy is not enough.

  • Current identity evidence accepted by SSA. If the marriage was more than two years ago or the marriage document cannot establish identity, SSA may also require identity evidence in the prior name.
  • Citizenship or immigration evidence if SSA needs to establish or update that status. Enter identity numbers only with SSA.

The SSA service determines whether your request can be completed online or needs an appointment. SS-5 is a paper companion when that route calls for it.

Is Name & Next right for me?

For adult U.S. citizens living in Minnesota and taking their spouse’s current last name unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States. You can also buy before a planned U.S. wedding and use the same purchase afterward.

Check the full fit before buying

Any state credentials or vehicle records you want to update must already be Minnesota records, with vehicle owners staying the same. Having no state credentials or vehicle records is fine. Interstate and ownership transfers, hyphenated or newly created names, divorce, court ordered changes and immigration routes are outside this plan. Read the full eligibility details.

You can prepare before the wedding or while waiting for your certified marriage certificate. Official updates still depend on the recorded marriage and each agency’s requirements.

Do I have to wait for a new Social Security card before going to DVS?

If you have a Social Security number, DVS says to update SSA first and wait until SSA confirms it processed your name change. You can check online or wait for the card in the mail. The DVS name change instructions focus on the processed update. Mailing a request or counting a set number of days does not establish that confirmation.

Does the Minnesota online preapplication complete my name change?

No. It prepares for the office visit. DVS directs you to an office offering license or ID renewals, with your current credential and certified marriage evidence linking your names. It accepts a certified marriage certificate or a marriage license with a certified recorded marriage date. Be ready for a new photo. Check the visit and document requirements before you go.

How soon should I apply for a license or ID showing my new name?

Apply within 30 days of the legal name change. The driver license statute requires a duplicate license application with the fee and former and new names. DVS separately states the 30 day requirement in its ID card instructions. This concerns applying, not receiving the card. If the deadline is close and SSA processing is unresolved, contact DVS promptly about your situation.
