Changing your last name after marriage in Texas
Get your name change done. Enjoy being married.
For a marriage license issued in Texas, the issuing county clerk provides certified copies. DSHS verification letters are different documents. DPS accepts a verification letter for its name change process, but another agency may need the certified record.

Know what to have ready for DPS.
Texas DPS updates your driver license or ID at an office visit. Your plan keeps the requirements and documents to gather beside that step, so you can prepare before you go.
DPS says to visit within 30 days of the name change. Office services are by appointment, so check availability early.

Request your Social Security name update
Open SSA's name-change service to start the request or arrange the appointment it requires.

Original or issuing-agency certified marriage record; an ordinary photocopy or notarized copy is not enough.

- Current identity evidence accepted by SSA. If the marriage was more than two years ago or the marriage document cannot establish identity, SSA may also require identity evidence in the prior name.
- Citizenship or immigration evidence if SSA needs to establish or update that status. Enter identity numbers only with SSA.
The SSA service determines whether your request can be completed online or needs an appointment. SS-5 is a paper companion when that route calls for it.

Is Name & Next right for me?
For adult U.S. citizens living in Texas and taking their spouse’s current last name unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States. You can also buy before a planned U.S. wedding and use the same purchase afterward.
Check the full fit before buying
Any state credentials or vehicle records you want to update must already be Texas records, with vehicle owners staying the same. Having no state credentials or vehicle records is fine. Interstate and ownership transfers, hyphenated or newly created names, divorce, court ordered changes and immigration routes are outside this plan. Read the full eligibility details.
You can prepare before the wedding or while waiting for your certified marriage certificate. Official updates still depend on the recorded marriage and each agency’s requirements.
Where do I get the right marriage record?
For a marriage license issued in Texas, order a certified copy from the county clerk that issued it. DSHS offers marriage verification letters, which are a different document. DPS accepts a DSHS verification letter for its name change process, but another agency may need the certified record. Check before ordering. If your marriage was recorded elsewhere, request the record from the authority that holds it. Texas DSHS explains the difference.
What if my local DPS office has no appointments?
DPS suggests checking another location or looking again for a cancellation. It also releases a limited number of additional appointments during the day. An opening is not guaranteed, so it helps to check while you gather your documents. See DPS appointment options.
Does changing my name on the car title add my spouse?
No. Texas treats correcting your name and adding another owner as different title transactions. Name & Next covers a name correction with the same owners. Adding your spouse requires a separate ownership transfer, which is outside this plan. Your county tax office can confirm the details for your vehicle. See sections 7.6 and 16.13 of the Texas title manual.
