Changing your last name after marriage in Indiana
Get your name change done. Enjoy being married.
Indiana requires a BMV branch visit within 30 days of your name change to amend a license or ID. Social Security must complete its update first, followed by at least one business day before the visit. Prepare your documents around that sequence.

With Name & Next
A head start on the paperwork.
Which application applies to you? What documents should you have beside you? Does another update need to happen first?
Name & Next asks about your situation and brings the relevant guidance together, so you can start with more of those questions answered. Have what you’ll need in front of you, including the details worth checking before you submit.

Some services fill selected applications or provide printed materials and mailing supplies. Check what’s included and what you still complete yourself.

Prepare for a name update with the same owners.
For your vehicle registration, BMV’s document requirements differ depending on whether your new last name also changes the registration’s expiration. Your plan helps you prepare for the case that applies.
Your plan also distinguishes changing your last name from adding a vehicle owner. You can prepare for a registration amendment without assuming an ownership transfer applies. For the title itself, the plan helps you ask BMV which steps your situation needs.

Request your Social Security name update
Open SSA's name-change service to start the request or arrange the appointment it requires.

Original or issuing-agency certified marriage record; an ordinary photocopy or notarized copy is not enough.

- Current identity evidence accepted by SSA. If the marriage was more than two years ago or the marriage document cannot establish identity, SSA may also require identity evidence in the prior name.
- Citizenship or immigration evidence if SSA needs to establish or update that status. Enter identity numbers only with SSA.
The SSA service determines whether your request can be completed online or needs an appointment. SS-5 is a paper companion when that route calls for it.

Is Name & Next right for me?
For adult U.S. citizens living in Indiana and taking their spouse’s current last name unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States. You can also buy before a planned U.S. wedding and use the same purchase afterward.
Check the full fit before buying
Any state credentials or vehicle records you want to update must already be Indiana records, with vehicle owners staying the same. Having no state credentials or vehicle records is fine. Interstate and ownership transfers, hyphenated or newly created names, divorce, court ordered changes and immigration routes are outside this plan. Read the full eligibility details.
For an Indiana vehicle title, your plan provides preparation and a request for BMV to confirm the process. It does not provide a verified complete filing procedure for changing the same owner’s last name.
You can prepare before the wedding or while waiting for your certified marriage certificate. Official updates still depend on the recorded marriage and each agency’s requirements.
What marriage evidence should I bring to BMV?
For a license or ID amendment, BMV lists a marriage license among its accepted documents. Use an original or a copy certified by the issuing agency, in English or with a verifiable accurate English translation. The legal name and date of birth on your documents must match Social Security’s records. The amendment requires a branch visit and cannot be completed online. Check Indiana’s credential document requirements.
Does my updated license cover the registration evidence?
It depends on whether your last name change also changes the registration’s expiration. For that case, BMV asks for name change documentation if your Indiana license has not already been updated. For a name change without an expiration change, it separately requires proper name change evidence. Both amendments require a branch visit. Check which case applies before gathering your documents. Compare BMV’s registration amendment cases.
What help do I get for my vehicle title?
Your plan helps you ask BMV whether a title update applies and which application, documents and fees it requires when owners stay the same. The published title instructions address adding or removing owners, so they do not establish a complete filing route for this last name change. The registration rule requiring a title change first applies to adding or removing owners. Contact BMV about your title.
