Changing your last name after marriage in Nevada
Get your name change done. Enjoy being married.
For a Nevada DMV name change, you need a certified marriage certificate filed after the ceremony. The marriage license issued beforehand is not accepted. Where you order the certificate depends on where the marriage was recorded.

With Name & Next
A head start on the paperwork.
Which application applies to you? What documents should you have beside you? Does another update need to happen first?
Name & Next asks about your situation and brings the relevant guidance together, so you can start with more of those questions answered. Have what you’ll need in front of you, including the details worth checking before you submit.

Some services fill selected applications or provide printed materials and mailing supplies. Check what’s included and what you still complete yourself.

Know what matters before you make the trip.
Your plan keeps the Nevada details close to the step they affect: at least two business days after Social Security updates your record, and insurance in your new name if you are updating a vehicle registration. DMV’s checklist does not require you to wait for the physical Social Security card.
You can see what to gather and which updates come first before setting aside time for a DMV visit. Most offices require appointments. The official instructions stay alongside the preparation, so you have somewhere useful to turn when it is time to check a requirement.

Request your Social Security name update
Open SSA's name-change service to start the request or arrange the appointment it requires.

Original or issuing-agency certified marriage record; an ordinary photocopy or notarized copy is not enough.

- Current identity evidence accepted by SSA. If the marriage was more than two years ago or the marriage document cannot establish identity, SSA may also require identity evidence in the prior name.
- Citizenship or immigration evidence if SSA needs to establish or update that status. Enter identity numbers only with SSA.
The SSA service determines whether your request can be completed online or needs an appointment. SS-5 is a paper companion when that route calls for it.

Is Name & Next right for me?
For adult U.S. citizens living in Nevada and taking their spouse’s current last name unchanged after a marriage recorded in the United States. You can also buy before a planned U.S. wedding and use the same purchase afterward.

Any state credentials or vehicle records you want to update must already be Nevada records, with vehicle owners staying the same. Having no state credentials or vehicle records is fine. Interstate and ownership transfers, hyphenated or newly created names, divorce, court ordered changes and immigration routes are outside this plan. Read the full eligibility details.
If you have Nevada vehicle records but no Nevada driver license or ID, your plan helps you confirm the accepted route with DMV. A complete vehicle filing route for that situation has not been verified.
You can prepare before the wedding or while waiting for your certified marriage certificate. Official updates still depend on the recorded marriage and each agency’s requirements.
Do I need my new Social Security card before the DMV visit?
Nevada requires your Social Security record to be updated first, with at least two business days for the update to reach DMV. Its published visit checklist does not require you to wait for the physical card. Bring your current license or ID, legal evidence of the name change and the DMV application. A new Social Security card alone is not enough. Check the DMV’s document list.
Which marriage document should I order?
For Nevada DMV, use a certified marriage certificate filed after the ceremony. The license issued beforehand is not accepted. For a Nevada marriage, certificates are filed with the Clark County Clerk or, in other counties, the County Recorder. If you married elsewhere, request the certificate from the authority that recorded your marriage. See Nevada’s marriage document requirements. For a Clark County wedding, order certified proof of marriage.
Does my vehicle title have to change too?
When the owners stay the same, Nevada makes the title name change optional but recommends it. Registration still needs attention: obtain Nevada Evidence of Insurance with the name matching your license and registration, then bring it with your marriage evidence and registration slip. Ask your lienholder about approval before a title change. Adding or removing owners requires a separate title change and is outside this plan. Review Nevada’s vehicle instructions.
