REAL ID and your name change: what matters since enforcement began

REAL ID stopped being a future deadline on May 7, 2025. Since that date, DHS confirms that state licenses without the compliant star marking “are no longer accepted as valid forms of identification at airports.” After a legal name change, the state’s license-reissue process determines which REAL ID document checks apply and which documents must connect the former and current names.

What the DMV has to see

DHS publishes the federal minimum: documentation of your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, two proofs of your principal residence, and lawful status. The name change wrinkle is the chain of custody: your birth certificate shows the name you were born with, and if the name you are claiming differs, the examiner needs the document that connects them. For most married couples that is the certified marriage certificate. No linking document, no compliant card, and another trip.

When state guidance puts Social Security first

A REAL ID transaction verifies your Social Security number, and if you cannot present the card, DHS lists acceptable substitutes: a W-2, an SSA-1099, a non-SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing your name and SSN. If you fly before the new card arrives

A valid U.S. passport is an acceptable alternative at the checkpoint, and enhanced licenses from Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont also qualify. So a name change in progress does not ground you; it just means your documents travel as a set for a few weeks. Book tickets in the name your ID will actually show on the travel date, the same rule that governs the passport step.
