How to change your name after marriage in Illinois
Your state’s instructions
Illinois does not publish a statement requiring the Social Security update first. Its pages ask instead for a document linking your previous name to your new one. Updating Social Security early is still the safer order.
Passport, vehicle, and voter records follow their own current instructions rather than one universal order.
State-specific caution
The Office of the Illinois Secretary of State states that you must notify it of a name change within 10 days and apply for a corrected driver’s license or state ID within 30 days.
