How to change your name after marriage in Massachusetts
Your state’s instructions
Massachusetts recommends getting the Social Security card first, because the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles checks the Social Security number during the license transaction. It recommends that order rather than requiring it. Updating Social Security early is still the safer order, because federal and financial records are checked against it.
Passport, vehicle, and voter records follow their own current instructions rather than one universal order.
